This is a good thing though, really, because it forces me to amp up my game to make sure I'm not just lazy using Nik sometimes. Much of that began when Instagram came out (and the other simlar filter iPhone cameras) because in general, my clients are much more savvy than they used to be regarding filters and effects. My honest opinion in hearing Nik was now sold for much less is that I need to be much more careful using it, making sure I'm not producing the same effects as everyone else on the block. So if I can do something with Nik such as layering effects to get exactly the look I want, but taking 75% less time to do it, then I'll do it every time! And I'm not the only pro photog who does this-there are thousands of us who love the speed and, of course, the wonderful effects you can achieve. I use Nik on almost all of my images.not because I can't do it in Photoshop, but because time is money. I know Photoshop well, but am a professional photographer. Google’s announcement seems to indicate the company is committed to the pro photography market. On a slightly related note, Snapseed, once a $9.99 app in iTunes, is now free in the iTunes store. They have also released a variety of new online tutorials. The entire collection is available for a free 15-day trial at Google has graciously agreed to upgrade all users of previous plug-ins to the entire collection for free.

The plug-ins are all compatible with Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture. HDR Efex Pro 2 is an alternative HDR processing solution while Viveza 2 is ideal for precise color control. Dfine2 is a robust noise correction application and Sharpener Pro 3 allows for finesses when sharpening imagery for output. Color Efex Pro 4 is a filter-driven solution that provides minute contrast controls, polarization, and a range of color enhancements. The Nik suite includes a variety of photo editing tools, a favorite among them being Silver Efex Pro 2, a highly intuitive black and white conversion software that provides tonality controls and toning steps similar to those once standard in the darkroom.
